Skills In Demand (SID) 482 Visa

As of December 7 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaces the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa.

This means that new applications for the TSS 482 visa cannot be accepted, however, applications lodged prior to this date will continue to be assessed per the legislation in force at that time.

The new SID 482 visa streamlines processes, offers extended validity periods to those previously limited by the 2-year cap, and provides a greater opportunity to pursue employer sponsored permanent residence.

Some of the eligibility criteria for the SID 482 visa has changed, as outlined below.

General Criteria for Employers

  • Be an approved Standard Business Sponsor

  • Evidence lawfully and actively operating

  • Have the financial capacity to meet employer obligations

  • Demonstrate there are no suitably skilled Australian applicants for the nominated position

  • Meet caveats relevant to the nominated position

General Criteria for Visa Applicants

  • Evidence at least 1 year relevant work experience within the last 5 years

  • Demonstrate the below criteria, relevant to the nominated stream

  • Meet caveats relevant to the nominated position

  • Meet relevant health and character requirements

There are three streams to nominate an SID 482 visa under:

  1. Specialist Skills stream

  2. Core Skills stream

  3. Labour Agreement stream

Specialist Skills Stream

General Requirements

  • Annual income threshold AUD 135,000 or higher

  • Nominate an occupation in ANZSCO Major Group 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6

    • trades, machinery operators, drivers and labourers are excluded

  • English language ability: Equivalent of IELTS 5 or higher

Core Skills Stream

General Requirements

  • Annual income threshold AUD 73,150 or higher

  • Nominate an occupation from the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

  • English language ability: Equivalent of IELTS 5 or higher

Labour Agreement Stream

To assist employers fill the vacancy of niche positions that aren’t available in the above mentioned occupation groups, employers may be able to enter into specifically tailored agreements with the government.

General Requirements

  • Annual income threshold is as specified in the Labour Agreement

  • Nominate an occupation defined in the Labour Agreement

  • English language ability: Equivalent of IELTS 5 or higher, unless otherwise specified
